SCARCE LOW MINTAGE 1874 HALF EAGLE
There were only 3,488 half eagles made for circulation in 1874 at the Philadelphia mint. I regard this issue as among the scarcer—and clearly among the most undervalued—of all the With Motto half eagles from this facility.
As seen on virtually all known examples, this piece is heavily abraded. Unlike most, this 1874 half eagle hasn’t seen multiple scrubbings and it still retains natural rich yellow-gold color.
The lone APR for this date in NGC AU58 since 2000 occurred in early 2024 when Heritage sold a nasty example for $5,040.
