NUMISMATICALLY SIGNIFICANT NGC MS61 1856-S GOLD DOLLAR
Its status as the sole Type Two gold dollar from the San Francisco mint makes the 1856-S a desirable issue. It is scarce in the lower Uncirculated range, and it becomes rare in MS63 and finer
This lustrous light yellow-gold example shows a fairly significant reverse mark beneath the 56 in the date. A fine squiggly die crack on the obverse joins the T in UNITED with the portrait, and some mint-made clashmarks are seen at the central reverse.
The last APR for an NGC MS61 1856-S is back in 2014 when Heritage sold a similar quality example for $8,813. Prior to this, the last sale for this date in this grade occurred in 2009.
