SCARCE PCGS AU53 1867 HALF EAGLE
As a result of their virtually identical mintages, the 1867 half eagle is similar in overall rarity to the better-known 1866 With Motto. Around 90-100 are known in total and any piece approaching MS60 is very rare.
This orange-gold example has lots of remaining body but, as on virtually every known 1867 half eagle in the business strike format, the surfaces are liberally abraded.
Since early 2006, just three non-CAC PCGS AU53 1867 half eagles have come up for sale at auction with the most recent APR being Stack’s Bowers 3/2020: 4198 at $3,120. Stack’s Bowers 4/2024: 6048, ex Fairmont and approved by CAC, sold for a strong $8,400.
