VERY SCARCE NGC AU55 1870-S $10.00
A scant 8,000 eagles were produced at the San Francisco mint in 1870. Around 70-80 exist today and this is a very scarce issue in AU55. It is likely unique in properly graded AU58 and unknown in any MS grade. The finest known—graded AU58 by PCGS and CAC—sold for a record-setting $41,125 in late 2022.
This is a solid coin for the date and grade with nice overall color on the obverse and, to a somewhat lesser degree, on the reverse. Some luster can be seen while the surfaces are free of deep, detracting marks.
An NGC AU55 sold for $9,900 as Heritage 2022 ANA: 4978.
This piece is close to being in the Condition Census for the issue.
