FROSTY PCGS MS61 1847-C HALF EAGLE

With an estimated population of as many as 400+, the 1847-C ranks as among the more available half eagles from this mint. However, this date is actually quite rare in all Uncirculated grades with likely not more than 9-10 known. There is one Gem (the PCGS/CAC MS65 from the Pittman Collection), and two PCGS MS63s. The remaining examples are mostly in the MS61 to MS62 range.

This is an unquestionably “new” coin from the standpoint of grade as it show no actual wear from circulation. The surfaces show rich, very frosty mint luster that has not been thinned by having been dipped or scrubbed with an abrasive. The color is a bold yellow-gold hue with a bit of coppery shading seen on Liberty’s jawline and at the back of her neck. I’m going to assume the slight roughness on the upper reverse—below the letters in STATES OF—are the primary reason for this otherwise-deserving coin to have not passed at CAC.

Stack’s Bowers 2020 ANA: 1262 at $15,600 was very similar to this coin in terms of its appearance and quality, except it had a CAC sticker; it brought $15,600.
