RARE BORDERLINE GEM 1863 GOLD DOLLAR, PCGS/CAC MS64
The 1863 is the single scarcest business strike gold dollar of the Civil War era made in Philadelphia. It is also the second scarcest of any date gold dollar from this facility, trailing only the low mintage 1875. This is among the finest examples of this date that DWN has sold, trailing just the remarkable PCGS/CAC MS68 we purchased for a collector as Stack’s Bowers 11/2024: 5325 at $192,000.
This is an “old friend” as we last sold this frosty yellow-gold near-Gem in 2016. I believe it has a shot to regrade MS64+ if resubmitted to PCGS, as it has extremely choice surfaces and 100% natural rich yellow-gold color on both sides.
Legend 5/2022: 237, graded MS64+ by PCGS/CAC, sold for $14,888, while Stack’s 11/2023: 318, graded MS62 by PCGS/CAC brought $11,400.
A simply outstanding coin for the gold dollar specialist or for the Civil War gold aficionado.
CAC has approved just two in MS64 with four finer.
