RARE PCGS MS61 1871 HALF EAGLE: A CONDITION CENSUS EXAMPLE

There are fewer than 100 business strike examples of this date known, and this is certainly expected from an issue with an original mintage of just 3,200. I have never offered an Uncirculated 1871 half eagle prior to buying this example at the recent CSNS show, and I consider it to be a highlight of my current inventory.

I have never seen an 1871 half eagle that was not abraded and this example is no exception. However, it is not as marked-up as is typical for the issue and the overall eye appeal is quite high for the date. And—it must be pointed out—this is one of just a handful of 1871 half eagles that is fully original with 100% intact rich orange-gold color on either side. I can state from experience that there are likely not more than a half dozen 1871 half eagles in all grades combined that have not been aggressively manipulated.

The last APR for a PCGS MS61 1871 half eagle occurred back in October 2020 when DLRC sold an inferior coin with questionable cheeto-orange color for $22,585.
