VIRTUALLY UNIMPROVABLE PCGS/CAC MS66 1888 THREE DOLLAR GOLD

Regardless of date, any Three Dollar gold piece is very scarce in properly graded MS66. This is compounded by the addition of a CAC sticker. As of May 2025, this firm had approved only 56 coins in total in MS66 as well as another 17 pieces finer. To locate a coin finer than MS66 with CAC approval can take years, and such a coin is likely to cost $100,000+; more if it is a rare date. Of the 56 coins, 15 (approximately 30%) are dated 1888, making this issue perfect for inclusion in a high-grade type set of US gold coins.

This date is found nice but I can’t recall having seen a significantly better 1888 $3 than this. Full frosty luster is evident on both sides with natural rich yellow-gold hues. Even under a 5x glass, there are no marks of note and the overall eye appeal is extremely impressive.

Since 2020, there have been just two APRs for an 1888 $3 in PCGS/CAC; this exact coin which has sold twice (see below). Legend sold a PCGS/CAC MS66+ as 5/2022: 234 for $36,425.

Ex Stack’s Bowers 4/2025: 3136 ($24,000), earlier ex Stack’s Bowers 11/2024: 3114 ($26,400).
