VERY SCARCE 1840-D $2.50 GRADED AU50 BY NGC

Winter 1-A. Very early die state with no sign of the extensive cracks seen on both sides. Extremely rare as such.

The 1840-D is the third rarest Dahlonega quarter eagle—trailing only the 1856-D and the 1855-D—and it is the rarest issue in terms of overall rarity. It is very rare in properly graded AU55 to AU58 and it is unique in Uncirculated.

This piece has a great naked-eye appearance with even medium orange-gold color. The strike is about as sharp as on any 1840-D $2.50 I have seen with all of the central details up and bold. Star eight is oddly flat while most of the other stars show full or partially full radial lines. When the coin is tilted towards a light source, the surfaces show some light lines; likely the result of having been wiped many years ago with a cloth. Still, a very nice looking example of a date to which eye appeal is not really applicable to.

Recent auction comparables include Stack’s Bowers 2024 ANA: 3282 at $13,200 (obviously recolored), and Heritage 2022 ANA: 3282 at $14,400 (stripped naked).

Ex Stack’s Bowers 4/2025: 3116 where I purchased it for $12,600.
