VERY SCARCE PCGS AU55 1859-S HALF EAGLE
Around 70-80 examples of this date are currently accounted for, and the 1859-S is very scarce in the AU55 to AU58 range. I am aware of two in Uncirculated; the better one—graded MS63 by PCGS and approved by CAC—sold for a record-shattering $144,000 in April 2022.
This coin has a natural appearance and this makes it very desirable as the majority of the AU 1859-S half eagles I am aware of have appearance issues.
Only four PCGS AU55 1859-S half eagles have sold at auction since 1999, with the most recent occurring in August, 2022 when a nice PCGS/CAC coin hit the $13,200 level. Prior to this, none had sold since 9/2010.
I believe that this date is undervalued in AU55 and AU58 grades and this borderline Condition Census 1859-S deserves a good new home.
