CONDITIONALLY SCARCE PCGS/CAC AU58 1884-CC $5
As with the similarly-dated eagle, the 1884-CC is scarce in AU58 and very rare—and fully priced, in my opinion—in any Uncirculated grade.
This slider is nearly indistinguishable from any of the MS61 examples of this date that I can recall having seen. It has a glowing natural rich yellow gold appearance with a ton of mint luster and very few marks of note. I bought this coin from a crack-out wholesaler who makes the bulk of his money getting coins such as this one go from AU58 to MS61. Including grading fees, he was into the coin at over $17,500. His loss is your gain.
Since mid-2013, three different PCGS/CAC 1884-CC half eagles have sold at auction. One was a + coin (i.e. AU58+) that brought $16,800 in 11/2022, while the others brought $13,800 (7/2023), and $19,200 (4/2022).
The Bender coin, a CAC approved PCGS MS61, realized $40,800; a record price for this date.
CAC has approved 22 in this grade with a single coin finer (MS61). The number of AU58 examples approved by CAC seems inflated.
