FANTASTIC FRESH-TO-THE-MARKET 1873-CC $20, PCGS/CAC AU58+
The 1873-CC is the fourth most available of the six Type Two double eagles from Carson City. With the acquisition of a high grade 1870-CC out of the question for 99% of all collectors and a high grade 1871-CC not a possibility for most double eagle buyers, this leaves the 1872-CC and the 1873-CC as the unquestionably most desirable of all the Type Two issues from this mint.
This is a fantastic fresh-to-the-market coin which was recently bought by me in a foreign auction. If I covered the slab insert and asked 10 experts to grade it, I am virtually certain that at least three--if not fully half---would conclusively state that this coin is a solid AU58…it’s that nice! The coin as 98% full luster, has never been dipped or otherwise monkeyed-with and both sides show attractive even light to medium natural yellow-gold color. A few light marks from contact with another coin rest on Liberty’s cheek and a few small scuffs can be seen in the left obverse field but all in all, tis coin is an absolute Gem.
This is the only AU58 1873-CC double eagle to be awarded a plus grade by PCGS and as I raved in the last paragraph, it is fully deserving of being a 58+. The 1873-CC was pretty seriously impacted by the Fairmont Hoard as PCGS/CAC AU58’s went from the low $40’s in 2022 (with APR’s of $43,200 in January and $42,829 in August) to $55,200 in August 2022 and then down to $28,800 in August 2024 and $25,200 in January of this year. This extreme volatility is exaggerated by the tiny sample size and I think this coin is easily worth every penny of what I am asking for it.
It is important to note than there is a $93,000 APR for this issue in PCGS/CAC MS61 in 2022 and another in PCGS MS61 (non-CAC) at $72,000 in 2024. In my opinion, the coin I am selling here absolutely blows away the latter of these coins.
PCGS has graded 74 in AU58 with 24 finer and, as I stated above, this exact coin is the sole 1873-CC $20 in AU58 to ever receive a plus (“+”) from this service. CAC has approved 18 in AU58 with just three finer. The PCGS Price Guide suggests a retail price of $55,000 for a PCGS AU58+ 1873-CC double eagle.
If you are working on a very choice set of CC twenties and you are smart enough to not spend $90,000+ on a PCGS/CAC MS61 example of the 1873-CC (O-V-E-R-B-U-Y) then run to the phone to call me to purchase this Gem Slider.
