PCGS/CAC AU58 1874-CC $20
The 1874-CC has a much different survival profile than the two most common Type Two CC double eagles, the 1875-CC and the 1876-CC. The 1874-CC is scarce in properly graded AU58, and it is quite rare in MS61 and finer. I have never seen or heard of a single coin better than MS62, and I am aware of just one or two at that level. It appears that the 1874-CC was handled differently than the 1875-CC and 1876-CC double eagles, as those two issues are seen with relatively choice surfaces. The 1874-CC,on the other hand, is nearly always found with profound detracting abrasions.
This lustrous yellow-gold example has just about the cleanest surfaces I can recall having seen on an AU58 1874-CC $20. What wear that is seen is limited to he cheek of Liberty as well as a semi-circle of light bag friction in the inner left obverse alongside the portrait.
No PCGS/CAC AU58 example of this date has sold at auction since Stack’s Bowers 2023 ANA: 1372 at $18,000. In 9/2023, an NGC/CAC AU58 brought $15,000. The last three APRs for PCGS/CAC MS61 1874-CC double eagles are $50,400 (3/2023), $48,000 (8/2022), and $45,600 (also 8/2022).
It’s been a long time since I’ve liked an 1874-CC enough to offer one for sale. I like this one a whole bunch.
CAC has approved 40 in this grade with seven finer.
