TOUGH PCGS/CAC MS65+ 1911-S $20.00

The 1911-S is easily locatable in grades through MS65 but it is scarce in MS66 and currently unique at PCGS in MS67.

I bought this coin at the recent CSNS from a very savvy wholesale dealer who showed me a number of tags from failed attempts to get this superior quality coin into an MS66 holder. In my opinion, the coin is very close to qualifying as a 66, but the surfaces are a touch too “busy.”

There is but a single APR for a PCGS/CAC 1911-S $20 and it is Stack’s Bowers 6/2023: 3425 at $8,400. In May 2022, Heritage sold a PCGS/CAC in MS66 for $31,200.

In my opinion, this coin is an excellent value in this grade as a CAC approved PCGS MS66—which will be impossible for many collectors to determine if it is nicer than my MS65+—will cost 3x+.

CAC has approved 61 in MS65 (including an unknown number in MS65+) with just nine finer.
