GEM PCGS/CAC MS65 1840 REVERSE OF 1839 HALF DOLLAR
WB-102. Small Reverse lettering.
1840 half dollars are found with two distinctive reverses: the more common with Small Letters, and the rare Medium Letters variety which was actually produced in New Orleans.
The 1840 Small Letters is an important transitional issue which is common in circulated grades and available in Uncirculated through MS64. Gems are very scarce, with the single finest known a PCGS/CAC MS66+ which is ex Heritage 3/2016: 4899 (as PCGS/CAC MS66) at $23,500.
This is a nicely toned, fully original Gem with wonderful bright lilac and rich orange-gold hues on both sides. The strike is sharp, the surfaces lack any major marks and the eye appeal is very evident.
For the variety, CAC has approved four in this grade with two finer.
