CHOICE CACG MS61 1889-CC $20.00
The 1889-CC is the second most difficult double eagle from Carson City to locate in Uncirculated grades from the 1880s after the 1885-CC. It is not often seen in MS62, and any example graded higher than this is extremely rare. A nice properly graded MS61 such as this is the most prudent purchase for most advanced collectors in this space.
The surfaces are lightly marked and very frosty with attractive natural rose-gold and lime hues. There is absolutely no wear on the high spots, and as we all know, CAC is very tough on gold coins in MS61 holders.
The sole APR for a PCGS/CAC M61 1889-CC was the Stack’s Bowers 2022 ANA: 3475 coin that sold for $26,400. Since the beginning of 2023, six PCGS MS61 coins without CAC approval have sold at auction. They have sold for prices ranging from a low of $14,400 (11/2024) to a high of $19,200 (8/2023).
CAC has approved or graded six in MS62 with nine finer.
