VERY PQ PCGS/CAC PR62CAM 1905 $20.00

Only 92 were struck, and my best estimate is that around half have survived. Most Proof 1905 double eagles are in the PR64 to PR65 range but there are a small number than grade PR58 to PR63. The members of this latter group are a motley array of miserable money but every now and then, a coin in this range is offered that sparks my interest.

When you first view this piece wit the naked eye, it looks like a PR64 CAM. Closer inspection reveals a few hairlines in the left obverse field but there are no signs that the coin ever entered circulation. When you see other Proof gold coins in the 62 grade, they tend to be impaired and often have egregious marks. Not this example. I feel that it wouldn’t look silly in a PR63 holder and the act that is a true cameo is quite unusual for this date.

As recently as the start of COVID, Proof double eagles were majorly undervalued with PR62s available from time to time for around $25,000-30,000. They were fantastic deals then and they remain good value given their size and rarity.

A non-CAC PR62 1905 $20 sold for $28,800 as Stack’s Bowers 2023 ANA: 5203, while an NGC PR62 brought the same amount as Heritage 2023 FUN: 3913. The coin I am offering here is miles nicer than these two.

CAC has approved this one coin as PR62 CAM with just two finer with this designation.
