IMPRESSIVE CONDITION CENSUS PCGS/CAC AU58 1868-S HALF EAGLE
Prior to the discovery of the Fairmont coins, the 1868-S was a very rare issue in the highest range of AU and it was exceedingly rare in Uncirculated. Post-Fairmont, the market has adjusted given the lack of popularity for this type (i.e., With Motto half eagles from San Francisco). That said, it should be pointed out that the all-time auction record of $72,000 was established in the January 2025 Heritage FUN sale when a PCGS/CAC MS62 1868-S half eagle was sold.
This is a lovely Gem Slider with warm orange-gold color which deepens to a vivid reddish-gold hue at the borders. The surfaces are clean and lack any significant abrasions. The overall eye appeal is very high.
Two different PCGS AU58 1868-S half eagles graded AU58 by PCGS sold at auction in 2022; both brought $9,600 and one was approved by CAC.
This is not a date that I would suggest overbuying (I’m looking at you, Mr. PCGS MS62…) and this very attractive sub-five figure coin will fill the 1868-S hole in a world-class set of Liberty Head half eagles.
CAC has approved four in this grade with just a single one finer (MS62).
