CHOICE PCGS/CAC 1806 KNOBBED 6 HALF EAGLE GRADED AU58

The 1806 Knobbed 6 is the most available Capped Bust Right half eagle. Given this fact—and the lack of any date premium due to scarcity—this makes an ideal type coin for the collector who is seeking a single choice, higher grade example of this very popular type.

This is an extremely attractive coin which has not been played around with in its 200+ year existence. Both sides are very frosty and show lovely rich green-gold with a blending of strong underlying reddish-gold. The strike is very sharp with all of the individual strands of Liberty’s hair clearly visible on the obverse; the reverse has complete definition on the eagle’s feathers and the lines within the shield. Close examination of the surfaces reveal an absence of marks which break the surface plane, while the overall eye appeal is unsurpassable for the grade.

PCGS has graded 53 coins in AU58 with 265 finer, while CAC has approved 18 in this grade with 60 finer. The PCGS Price Guide suggests a value of $20,000 for this date in PCGS AU58, while the CAC Price Guide gives a value of $19,000 for an 1806 Knobbed 6 half eagle in AU58. There has been just one auction sale for this date in PCGS AU58, and it was for $20,251 in early 2022. A PCGS/CAC AU55 brought $17,625 in 7/2023.
