A total of 1,300 business strike 1871 threes were made, and survivors are typically seen in the AU55 to MS62 range. This date is scarce in MS63 and MS64 and extremely rare as a Gem with PCGS having graded just one each in MS65, MS66, and MS67 grades.
This date tends to have a very appealing appearance and this PQ example shows thick frosty luster with complementary light lime and rose-gold colors. A few small ticks are seen in the upper left obverse, but this choice coin would not look out of place in an MS63 holder.
No PCGS/CAC MS62 has ever sold at auction, and the most recent APR for a non-CAC 1871 in PCGS MS62 is Heritage 6/2023: 93024 at $10,202.
An outstanding example of this tough issue.
