POPULAR PCGS EF40 1799 DOLLAR

Every serious collector should own a few 18th century American coins, and with gold struck from 1795 through 1799 priced out of reach for most, a nice VF, EF or even an AU silver dollar would make a welcome addition to your set.

This piece has an instantly appealing “circulated cameo” appearance with deep dove-grey colors that gets darker towards the edges.

I’m assuming this coin failed at CAC as the result of some old scratches in the obverse field just past stars six and seven. Or, perhaps it is the light very old cleaning on the left obverse. CAC is very tough when it comes to grading Bust Dollars with fewer than 500 non-overdate coins having received approval as of July 2025.

In 2024, just a single PCGS EF40 1799 bust dollar appeared at auction. It sold cheaply at $3,240; mainly because it was awful and should have been in a no-grade holder. In 2023, there were five separate coins sold at a range from a low of $4,080 to a high of $5,040.
