POPULAR 1856-S THREE DOLLAR GRADED AU58 BY PCGS
Medium S mintmark variety.
Not including the unique 1870-S there were but four different three dollar gold pieces made in San Francisco between 1855 and 1860. The 1856-S is the most readily available of this quartet, but it is scarce in properly graded AU58, and rare in any Uncirculated grade.
This is a lovely 100% original piece with attractive natural rose-gold color—in different configurations—on the obverse and the reverse. A significant amount of luster can be seen, and the surfaces appear to lack any marks of note. Some light wear can be seen on the high spots of the obverse, hence the AU58 grade.
No PCGS AU58 1856-S three dollar has sold at auction since 4/2020. Two CAC approved PCGS AU58s were sold at auction in 2022, with one bringing $10,575 and the other selling for $11,400.
If you are seeking a nice mintmarked example of this denomination, give this nice 1856-S some consideration.
