HARD-TO-FIND CHOICE EF 1859-D $5, PCGS/CAC EF45
Medium D variety.
In case you hadn’t noticed, locating any Dahlonega half eagle in pristine, original EF and AU grades—even a common date such as this 1859-D—has become extremely challenging in today’s rare gold coin market. Virtually all the nice pieces from the Fairmont hoard found long-term owners, and I can’t recall having had fewer DWN quality pieces in stock than through the first half of 2025.
This is an exceptional Old Skool Choice EF which would almost certainly grade AU53 at NGC. It has never been cleaned or lightened and the surfaces are mostly mark-free save for a few minor scuffs in the left obverse field. The eye appeal is well above-average for the grade.
Stack’s Bowers sold a very nice PCGS/CAC EF45 1859-D half eagle for $6,000 as Lot 1064 in their 2023 ANA sale.
I wish I had another dozen of these to sell…
CAC has approved two in this grade with 21 finer.
