PCGS AU55 1874-CC

The 1874-CC is not often seen finer than AU55, and with nice AU58s still selling for over $10,000 many collectors feel—probably rightfully—that a nice AU55 represents the best value grade for the date.

This bright yellow-gold example shows a typical soft strike at the centers and the surfaces are moderately abraded as is typical for the issue. There is plenty of remaining luster seen on both sides.

The last PCGS AU55 to sell at auction went cheaply at $5,640 as Stack’s Bowers 5/19: 1212, but earlier in the year another PCGS AU55 brought $7,800 as Stack’s Bowers 3/19: 2136, while Stack’s Bowers 10/18: 2188 went for $8,700.

This date has been impacted by recent hoards from overseas and it is more available in AU55 than it was a few years ago. That said, this date routinely sold for $8,000-9,000 in AU55 as recently as late 2017/early 2018.
