The 1842 is the second rarest pre-Civil War quarter eagle from Philadelphia, trailing only the extremely rare 1841. There an estimated 50-60 known from the mintage of just 2,823.
This medium russet-gold example has somewhat busy surfaces but based on the detail and remaining luster, I am OK with the coin as an AU50.
Only two PCGS AU50 1842 quarter eagles have sold at auction since 2017. One brought $7,200 in 8/2023, while the other sold for $7,500 in 4/2021.
