SCARCE PCGS/CAC AU55 1884-CC $10.00
The 1884-CC is scarcer than the 1880-CC and the 1881-CC, but it is narrowly more available than the 1882-CC and the 1883-CC eagles. In my experience, properly graded AU55 examples of the1884-CC make more sense from a financial standpoint than an AU58 (which will run you around $20,000 for a nice PCGS/CAC) or an Uncirculated piece (the most recent auction sale was the PCGS MS62 that brought $60,000 as Heritage 2025 FUN: 4866).
This coin is a textbook AU55 with 100% unmolested surfaces that display crusty natural russet and green-gold hues. Plenty of underlying luster is sen on both sides and there are no marks of note save for a shallow scrape below stars one and two. There are pronounced raised scratches on Liberty’s neck that are mint-made; these are seen on every known 1884-CC eagle.
There have been no auction sales of a PCGS/CAC AU55 1884-CC eagle since early 2020. In February 2025, Stack’s Bowers sold a non-CAC PCGS AU55 for $14,400.
In my opinion, this is an exemplary coin in all respects and it will be a good fit in most higher grade eagle collections from Carson City.
CAC has approved 10 in this grade with 22 finer.
