A PCGS/CAC COLLECTOR GRADE 1872-CC $10, ex Fairmont

With fewer than 100 known in total, the 1872-CC $10 is a scarce coin in any grade.

This is an impressive example for the grade and it seems closer to EF40 than VF35 in terms of the detail. (If you think this is sales hype, go online and look at the PCGS/CAC EF40 that Heritage sold in May, 2022). The feathers are very sharp while the left-facing claws are weakly struck, as is common for the issue. The color is exceptional and I can’t recall having seen more than two or three VF-EF examples of this date that weren’t ruined from having been abrasively cleaned.

This is one of two PCGS/CAC VF35s to sell at auction; the other brought $18,290 in a 7/2021 sale. Since late 1999, only three VF35 and nine EF40 coins graded by PCGS have crossed the block.

To find a better 1872-CC $10 for your collection, you’ll need to spend at least 10k more for a nice EF45; if you can even locate such a coin.

CAC has approved a total of 16 in all grades with this one in VF35 and a dozen finer.
