PCGS AU55 1843-O $10, ex FAIRMONT
The 1843-O is among the most available No Motto eagles from New Orleans. It is not easily located in properly graded AU55 or AU58, and it is very rare in Uncirculated with less than 10 known.
This piece is 100% natural with rich straw-gold color seen on both sides. As on many examples, the surfaces are somewhat baggy, and I’m 99% certain that this is the reason why the coin didn’t get approval at CAC.
I paid $7,500 for a very choice PCGS/CAC AU55 1843-O $10 in the Stack’s Bowers 11/2024 sale, while a low-end non-Fairmont example in a non-CAC PCGS 55 holder sold for $4,560 in Stack’s Bowers 2024 ANA.
