VERY POPULAR PCGS/CAC AU53 1801 $10.00
BD-2, R-2.
Capped Bust Right eagles were made from 1795 through 1804. While thousands exist, only a small percentage (likely well under 10%) of these are nice enough for DWN to offer for sale.
The 1801 is the second most available date of this design after the 1799 but it is less popular due to its not having been produced during the 18th century. However, if you are a type collector who has been searching high and low for a nice early eagle, you’ll likely be happy to find a coin which has been approved by CAC.
This example is a medium green-gold with some deeper reddish hues around the obverse periphery. The strike is sharp with Liberty’s hair and the eagle’s feathers both completely defined. There is a tiny mark opposite Liberty’s lips while the spines in the cap are mint-made clashmarks which are diagnostic to this variety. On the reverse, there is a rim bump at 5:00.
No PCGS/CAC AU53 example of this date has ever sold at auction, but a PCGS/CAC AU50 brought $26,400 as Heritage 5/2022: 3993. In their March 2023 auction, Heritage sold a PCGS/CAC 1799 Large Stars eagle in AU53 for $28,800.
I constantly am asked to source early eagles with PCGS approval and I have no doubt that this 1801 will sell quickly.
CAC has approved four in this grade with 75 finer.
