THE PITTMAN 1849-C HALF EAGLE: A CONDITION CENSUS PCGS/CAC MS63

Any Charlotte half eagle that grades PCGS/CAC MS63 is an important coin, and one with the pedigree that is this important (see below) stands out as a potential collection centerpiece.

This coin is notable for its glowing mint luster as well as its attractive natural burnt-gold color with some reddish tinges in the obverse fields. There is a small mark on the neck of Liberty which is old (this is easy to figure this out as there is no change of color around the mark as there would be on a newer one…). This is a true MS63 and it is the best 1849-C that I’ve ever handled.

The finest known is an NGC MS66 that has been off the market since 2004 when it brought $70,150 in a Bowers and Merena sale. This is followed by the Bass 2: 1003 coin, a PCGS MS64 that last sold in 1999. The comes two or three in MS63 of which the nicest is the coin plated in PCGS Coinfacts.

If you need a single high-grade C mint five for your seven-mint set, or if you are assembling a world-class date set, you are not likely to find a better coin than this!

Ex David Akers 10/1997: 990 where it sold for $23,100 as a raw “Uncirculated,” earlier from the John Pittman Collection and obtained directly from the Farouk sale in 1954 as Lot 251; originally from the Col. EHR Green Collection.
