CONDITIONALLY SCARCE PCGS MS63+ 1893-CC $5 WITH CAC APPROVAL
A numismatically significant issue due to its status as the final year-of-issue for Carson City half eagles, the 1893-CC is still not easily located in properly graded MS63. In MS64, it remains very scarce with just six currently graded by PCGS (as well as two in MS64+). PCGS has never graded this date in MS65 and I seriously doubt such a coin exists.
This coin is fresh-to-the-market and it is notable for its 100% natural appearance. The color is an appealing medium gold while the luster is frosty and abundant. A few small, shallow scuffs are visible n the fields but, in my opinion, the plus grade which this coin received from PCGS is justifiable due to its overall PQ appearance.
Stacks Bowers 4/2022: 5171, also graded PCGS/CAC MS63+, brought $22,800 and this is the only relevant comparable.
With non-CAC PCGS MS64 examples likely to cost $25,00 (if you can even find one), this seems like the highest sensible grade 1893-CC $5 for a high-end set of half eagles from this mint.
CAC has approved 46 in MS63 (plus another five in 63+) with eight finer.
