There are very few more misunderstood Dahlonega half eagles than the 1840-D. It is very scarce—if not rare—with natural color and surfaces. It is also numismatically significant as the first half eagle from this mint with the revised second Liberty Head design and the mintmark now on the reverse. It is also one of just three Dahlonega issues with the Small Letters reverse; making it a distinctive and important type.
I can’t imagine a nicer circulated example of the 1840-D than this. It is 100% natural and has never been lightened or otherwise monkeyed with. The color is a rich honey-gold with great detail for the grade as well as minimal marks and light wear. In my opinion, this lovely coin wouldn’t seem silly in an AU53 or even an AU5 holder…it’s that nice!
The last PCGS/CAC AU50 1840-D Tall D half eagle to sell brought $5,760 in April 2018, a far less competitive market than we have in early 2025. In their 2024 ANA auction, Stack’s Bowers sold a PCGS/CAC AU53 for $7,800. This coin is much nicer, in my opinion.
CAC has approved four in this grade with five finer.
