SCARCE PCGS/CAC MS62 1889 $20

This is one of just two P mint double eagles from the 1880s (along with the 1888) that is not extremely rare (or in some cases unknown) in MS62. The 1889 is seldom seen finer than nice MS62, and I have never personally seen or sold a business strike finer than MS63/63+.

This pleasing example is choice save for a cluster of light marks in the left obverse field and there is some darker color seen on the cheek and neck of Liberty which is the result of having lain in a bag for years with other gold coins.

Fairmont has had virtually no impact on this date in MS62 and higher as there is but one 1889 $20 in PCGS/CAC MS62 sold at auction since 2019; in their 1/2023 FUN sale, Heritage got a winning bid of $7,500 for such a coin.

With sales records of $19,800 for a PCGS/CAC MS63+ in 8/2020 and $14,400 for a PCGS/CAC MS63 in 1/2020, this choice PCGS/CAC MS62 at around half those prices seems like a real opportunity for the collector looking for good deals in the Type III $20 market.

CAC has approved 27 in this grade with only 4 finer.
