This date is less scarce than it was a decade ago as evidenced by the fact that a PCGS/CAC AU58 brought a strong $27,500 in the Stack’s Bowers 2012 ANA sale. Still, it remains rare and expensive in Uncirculated’ and this makes a gem slider such as this a desirable coin.
This coin is almost certainly from an overseas bank but it was last sold in 2017, a few years prior to the discovery of the Fairmont Hoard. It shows no real wear but enough bag friction to make it a really spiffy AU58. There are a lack of detracting abrasions as on most 1854 LD $20s and the color is a rich, even golden hue.
Before you say to yourself: “nice AU58 1854 LD $20s are everywhere,” it should be stressed that this exact coin is the sole PCGS/CAC AU58 to sell at auction since 2019, and one of just three since 2012!
CAC has approved 14 in AU58 with just 8 finer.
