PCGS/CAC MS60 1882-O $10, ex Fairmont
As recently as the mid-1980s, this was a very rare coin in Uncirculated. But as many as 20—or perhaps a few more—have turned up; mostly from European bank hoards with the typical example showing extensive bagmarks. So far, Fairmont has been a rich source for high grade 1882-O eagles with four in MS60, three in MS61, and a single coin in MS62 which set a price record for this issue as Stack’s Bowers 4/2022: 5321 at $40,800.
This coin is free of any wear and it shows especially nice deep original rose and orange-gold color over frosty surfaces. As expected from a coin in this grade, there are numerous shallow marks with a deeper abrasion seen over Liberty’s head pointing back at the southern point of star eight. For the date and grade, the quality is all there—and some.
I like this coin tons more than the PCGS/CAC MS60 that brought $10,200 as Stack’s Bowers 2024 ANA: 2122.
Ex Stacks Bowers 11/2024: 4159 where I bought it for $9,300.
