CONDITION RARITY PCGS MS63 1851 $5.00, ex Fairmont
With a mintage of 377,505, you would expect the 1851 to be reasonably available in MS63. This isn’t the case and I doubt there are even seven to nine known at this grade level. In MS64, this date is excessively rare and I am aware of just a single Gem: a PCGS MS65 that was sold for $52,875 as Legend 2/2021: 299.
This is the second best 1851 half eagle from the Fairmont hoard. The nicer one—by a very slight margin—brought $10,200 as Stack’s Bowers 2022 ANA: 3050.
This piece has outstanding rich yellow-gold color and it has 100% natural surfaces that are covered with thick mint frost. A small mark on Liberty’s nostril is likely what kept this coin from receiving approval at CAC, but I would put this attractive coin up against virtually any other MS63 1851 half eagle when it comes down to eye appeal.
All No Motto half eagles are difficult to locate in PCGS MS63, and this example would be perfect for a type set or a seven mint Liberty Head $5 set.
Ex Heritage 4/2022: 5058 ($9,000).
