Housed in an old green label holder, and seemingly conservatively graded by today’s standards in my opinion.
Moffat & Co. struck large numbers of half eagles for use in California in 1849 and 1850. From the number of circulated pieces (some showing loads of wear) it is clear that these were widely used and accepted. The 1850 half eagle is common by the standards of Pioneer gold, but nice EF45 to AU55 pieces remain affordable and are in strong demand.
This example is choice and original with rich even green-gold color.
No PCGS/CAC EF45 has sold since 5/2018. In early 2022, a PCGS/CAC AU50 sold for $11,100, while the exact same price was attained by a PCGS/CAC AU53 in the middle of that same year.
CAC has approved 5 in EF45 with 19 finer.
