VERY RARE PCGS MS61 1841-D QUARTER EAGLE

One of just four or five known in Uncirculated.

Winter Variety 2-C. Bass Collection pedigree.

The 1841-D is the fourth rarest of 20 Dahlonega quarter eagles, trailing only the 1856-D, 1840-D and 1855-D. An estimated 70-90 are known and this date is very scarce in the higher AU grades. It is a rarity in Uncirculated with just four or five known. These are as follows:

  1. PCGS MS63: Kansas Collection via DWN, ex 2004 FUN: 1017 at $40,250.

  2. NGC MS63: B+M 2/2010: 3590 ($48,875), ex Duke’s Creek Collection.

  3. PCGS MS61: this coin, see below for pedigree.

  4. NGC MS61: Stack’s Bowers 2022 ANA: 6026 ($45,600).

  5. NGC MS60: Heritage 2016 FUN: 5546 ($23,500).

This coin is uncommonly well-struck for the issue with very sharp central and border details. Both sides are frosty, and the color is a wholesome light to medium green-gold. There is no evidence of wear or rub and this coin is true to grade, in my opinion. For the sake of accuracy, it is important to mention a small mint-made planchet flaw or lintmark just past star thirteen on the obverse and a small dig on the reverse below the M in AMERICA.

This coin was recently crossed from an NGC MS61 holder, and I somehow overlooked it when I compiled the Condition Census for Dahlonega coins when working on the recent edition. (It will be included in the next update.)

With the two MS63 1841-D quarter eagles likely off the market for the next few decades, this coin is the sole Uncirculated example of this date that can be obtained by an advanced collector of branch mint quarter eagles.

I personally like this coin more than the Sykes NGC MS61 that realized close to $50,000 in the 2022 Stack’s Bowers ANA auction. And this coin blows away the coin in the DL Hansen Collection, which at PCGS AU53 rates as one of the lowest graded coins in his entire quarter eagle set(s).

Ex Heritage 2024 ANA; 4281, where it sold cheaply for $34,500 as NGC MS61, Bowers and Merena 5/1999: 337 ($12,650; as PCGS AU58), Harry Bass Collection, Stack’s 5/1968: 685.
