POPULAR NGC/CAC AU58 1839-D $2.50

HM-2, Winter-2. R-4

The 1839-D is desirable due to its status as the first quarter eagle produced at the recently-opened Dahlonega mint. It is a one-year type and its placement of the mintmark on the obverse is unique to this issue among the 20 quarter eagles made by this facility from 1839 to 1859.

This bright yellow-gold example has enough luster to qualify at the assigned grade. The wear is limited to the obverse high spots and the strike is excellent for this issue (It should be noted that the Winter 1 variety is usually found with much better central definition than its Winter 2 counterpart). Both sides show some marks and there is a shallow scrape on the vertical lines of the shield.

There are two auction records for PCGS/CAC AU58 1839-D quarter eagles. The more recent of the two is Heritage 5/2023: 3202 at a strong $37,200 while the other was ex Stacks Bowers 2022 ANA: 6019 which realized $28,800. No NGC/CAC AU58 coins have ever sold.

This coin is not as nice as the two PCGS/CAC AU58’s mentioned above but it is priced at a more reasonable number.

CAC has approved four in AU58 with seven finer.
