1864 $20.00 GRADED AU58 BY PCGS AND APPROVED BY CAC; A SCARCE AND POPULAR CIVIL WAR ISSUE
The Philadelphia mint produced five regular issue double eagles between 1861 and 1865. The 1862 is the rarest followed by the 1863 and the 1864. The 1864 is scarce in properly graded AU58, and it is very scarce in Uncirculated with the vast majority of the coins known falling into the MS60 to MS62 range.
I recently sold an exceptional PCGS/CAC MS62 example of this issue—from the Dr. William Crawford AWA Collection—and I took this attractive coin in trade towards the higher graded piece. This AU58 is among the very best circulated 1864 double eagles I can recall having ever offered for sale. It is toned in a medium rose-gold and light orange-gold hue and it doesn’t appear to have ever been dipped or lightened. The surfaces show just a few minor marks and the eye appeal is outstanding for the grade.
The most recent APR for a PCGS/CAC AU58 1864 double eagle was the Heritage 2023 ANA: 3158 coin at $24,000. Stack’s Bowers sold two PCGS AU58 examples for $19,000 each; one in 11/2024 and the other in 8/2024.
Values for this issue climb rapidly as the lower Uncirculated grades are reached with a PCGS/CAC MS61 1864 $20 worth in the mid-30s.
This coin would be an ideal fit in a high-quality Civil War gold set.
CAC has approved 15 in AU58 with 13 finer.
