PCGS/CAC 1853 ASSAY OFFICE $20 GRADED MS63
K-18, R-2. .900 variety
The shortage of large(r) denomination gold coins in the booming economy of Northern California in 1853 was addressed by the production of large quantities of double eagles by the US Assay Office of Gold. Today, these are the single most obtainable Territorial issues from California with examples known in grades as high as MS65 and even a single coin in MS66.
This choice example exhibits rich frosty luster over natural bright yellow-gold surfaces. A few small marks on the surfaces are seen but these are consistent with the assigned grade.
The last APR for this issue in PCGS/CAC was Heritage 2022 ANA:4188 which sold for $22,800. Since then, demand for choice, rare Pioneer issue has increased significantly.
An important Gold Rush memento.
