CHOICE FIRST-YEAR-OF-ISSUE 1850 $20 GRADED AU53 BY PCGS/CAC
The 1850 is always popular as it is the very first regular issue double eagle struck at the Philadelphia mint. It is common in all circulated grades, but choice AU examples with fully natural color and choice surfaces are not easily located.
This coin could have graded AU55 in my opinion due to its excellent detail and lack of noticeable wear. There is a good amount of luster seen beneath thick natural greenish-gold color, and I can confidently state that this is a 100% original 1850 $20.
A slightly less nice CAC approved PCGS AU53 1850 double eagle brought $4,920 as Heritage 9/2023: 3522, and a not-so-nice PCGS AU53 without CAC verification sold for $5,520 in the 2024 FUN auction.
To procure a finer 1850 double eagle, you’ll likely have to spend five figures on a nice AU58.
CAC has approved 38 in this grade with 96 finer.
