PCGS/CAC AU58 1859-D GOLD DOLLAR
The 1859-D is the most available Type III gold dollar from Dahlonega. While a fair number have been graded AU58 by PCGS, this figure is significantly inflated by resubmissions and by low-end examples. The current CAC population of 10 in this grade is much more in line with the actual number of properly graded AU58s that actually exist.
This light yellow-gold slider is very appealing for the grade and it looks like an MS62/63 coin to the naked eye. A more careful examination with 5x magnification shows some light rub on the high spots. With the exception of the 5 in the date which is blurry, the overall detail is slightly better than average for this issue.
Another PCGS/CAC AU58 1859-D gold dollar brought $7,800 as Stack’s Bowers 11/2024: 5320.
It has been quite a while since I offered a CAC approved PCGS AU58 1859-D gold dollar—or any other Type III issue from Dahlonega for that matter. This nice coin will sell quickly.
