GEM 1857 GOLD DOLLAR, PCGS/CAC MS66
The 1857 gold dollar is common in grades through MS64. It is hard to locate in MS65 and it is scarce in MS66. A small number of superb gem coins exist (PCGS has graded four in MS67 and two in MS67+), and there is a single PCGS/CAC MS68; it brought a record-setting $51,700 back in 2015.
This is a bona-fide Gem with soft, pillowy luster topped by even green-gold color. A few very minor obverse scuffs are all that keeps this coin from an MS67 grade and a $20,000+ price tag.
There has never been a PCGS/CAC MS66 1857 gold dollar sold at auction. In the Heritage 2022 ANA sale, a PCGS/CAC MS67+ brought $23,400.
CAC has approved seven in this grade with six finer.
